If it wasn't, then people would go and buy the Home basic version (because it is the cheapest) and then install Ultimate. My OEM DVD writer does not have any serial key. Try to install anyway your "incompatible" version and interrupt it when it will display number . After that you can copy serial number and install proper newest and "compatible" version with this number. I've just tried and it works.

You have a disc for Vista Home Basic then? That disc can be used to install Home Premium. Just key in your Home Premium registration key when prompted, and it should work. Once it is installed, your product key, if it's like the OEM key that came with my Acer, may not activate if you attempt internet activation.
